You’ve probably heard of Giveaway Of The Day - a site that provides you the licensed version of a paid software everyday. Usually the software provided is pretty useless or has better freeware alternatives. However, once in a while the folks at GAOTD come up with something that can actually be a valuable addition to a computer user’s toolkit.

Today (14 hours 24 minutes left at the time of writing) they are giving away Paragon Partition Manager 2009 Special Edition. Read up about it on Paragon’s site. It’s a pretty nifty tool and you can have it for free if you hurry up.

Halo!

Very often people use “hallo” instead of “hello” when they are posting something on the Internet. As you can see in my ‘Quack Wars’ entry, a spelling mistake can lead to quite humorous results! And the same happened when a newbie made a post on the lines of “halo, I have a problem….” (not the exact line, something like this). Like many others, my mind conjured up the image of Halo’s Master Chief and this is what I posted:

halo_master_chief_got_a_problem

Needless to say, that little post put me and a few others in a spot of bother with the mods for harassing a new member. ;)

Wallpaper - Frank Lampard (Chelsea)

I had made this wallpaper a few months ago, but I overlooked a few things and it didn’t turn out the way it was supposed to. At that time I didn’t realize that and even uploaded it to a few sites (sorry folks!). This week I finally got around to fixing it and finished the job.

Slick & Simple!

So here it is, ladies and gentlemen, put your hands together for the new avatar of my beloved blog!
As promised, the gallery is up and running with a few old photos from my photography collection. Now I’m not a pro and I don’t even have a digicam. All those photos have been clicked by my trusty old warhorse, the SE W700i cellphone’s camera. So don’t expect HD quality or anything remotely close. ;)
Now a few words about the theme. I chose this one because it was simple yet elegant, catchy but not a bit garish. Oh, and I liked the colour scheme as well. :D
So, are things getting back on track for this oft-neglected site? You bet! ;)

I’m Awake!

So finally I’ve woken up from my slumber and decided to tweak this blog. To begin with, I’ve added a ‘Random Quotes’ widget and since r Reading quotes is one of my favourite pastimes., I’ll be filling it up with loads and loads of witty, grim and inspiring quotations in the coming days.

I also plan to add an image gallery and import photos from my Flickr account into it. And if that’s not enough, I’ll even tweak the theme, perhaps replacing the messy desk with my own mess. ;)

What’s keeping me busy?

Well nothing, actually. Between sessions of PES2009 and Urban Terror, I browse forums and websites, post comments on fansites and… err… that’s about it.

That literally sums up what’s been going on since the past few weeks. It could have been so much different. But alas, right now I’m stuck on an incomplete job - my first freelance project. Why stuck? Because dear reader, the lovable chap who handed me the project is taking ages to provide me with the data needed to complete it. All that’s left is to fill in the data to complete the website, get a domain and upload the pages. God knows when this one will end.

Another project is in the pipeline, and I’m not gonna repeat the same mistake again, so I’ve asked my friend (who arranged for this deal) to collect the data first and foremost. That should go much smoother than my first effort.

Oh well, patience is key right now. So please be patient until I decide to post again. ;)

Spurs 1-0 Chelsea

A defeat at the hands of Spurs is always bitter, but the way we played in the first half, we were just asking to be beaten. The goal scored by Modric was a good one, but Bosingwa should have just gotten rid of the ball. Chelsea came alive in the second half, but never really exerted our authority. A few chances towards the end, good saves from Gomes and the crossbar prevented Chelsea from taking at least a point.

ManU lost to Fulham earlier and had Rooney as well as Scholes sent off. Chelsea could and should have taken advantage of their slip-up. But we didn’t and the gap still remains at 4 points.

As things stand, we’re 2nd in the table but could be overtaken by Liverpool if they win tomorrow. Oh well, let’s just wait and watch. And pray a little, maybe.

A few weeks ago I visited a book fair where I caught a glimpse of some newspapers from a bygone era. Since the authorities didn’t allow anyone to hang around for too long, I was able to click only a handful of pictures with my cellphone camera. Here they are:

A *New* New Look

It didn’t last long. I thought it would.

But sadly, I’ve decided to discard the theme that I customized for myself and revert to a run-of-the-mill Wordpress theme. Gone is the big header that screamed ‘Abhi’ and gone are the  plans that I had for creating something more than ‘just a blog’. The gallery which had a measly 3 photos is no longer there. The homepage or index has been sent packing. All that’s left is this blog. Mind you, it wasn’t a hasty decision to scrap the entire structure. There were quite a few things that I kept in mind while doing so.

First of all, it was getting too difficult to maintain a consistent look throughout the entire site. Make one change and I had to repeat it 3 times over.

Then, the colour scheme didn’t look too good after a while. I had worked hard to put it all together and in the beginning I was awestruck by it. But slowly I realized that the structure of the site and the look were just not good enough.

It was too plain. It was static. There was hardly any content. In short, it was too boring.

And then I suddenly realized that I don’t actually need all that stuff which I had planned on making.

So this is how it all looks now. Barebones but better than before, methinks. Maybe now I can concentrate more on writing rather than fiddling with the HTML and CSS. ;)

Some Things Never Change

Over the past few years the media has been singing praises of our Railway Minister and the dramatic turnaround he has brought about in the fortunes of this sector. The balance-sheet looks better every year for the Railways and the profits are at an all-time high. So you’d be forgiven for assuming that there has been a remarkable change in the standard of the trains and the facilities as well.

That was what I expected when I boarded the Pushpak Express from Nashik on the 20th of February. And although there was not too much to complain about, one thing caught my eye -

There's a roach in my coach!

There's a roach in my coach!

Click the image to get a clearer view of what I’m talking about.

Apparently, even after rigorous efforts to keep the compartment clean and hygienic, this creature escaped the clutches of the cleaning staff.

And this, in an AC 2 Tier coach. Go figure.

All I can say is - some things never change. :D

Like the title says, welcome to the new home of ‘A Little Lunacy!’. I finally got myself a paid hosting plan and a domain to boot. As you can see, the theme has that personal touch to it and it’s still under construction. I hope by the time I’m done with it, the blog will be better than ever before.

I’m a little busy these days in building another site for me and my two partners-in-crime. That means this theme will take a little more time to be completed. I’ll start posting regularly as soon as I complete my pending tasks. Until then, sayonara and stay safe! :)

My Debut on the Vital Football Network

Oh joy! I’ve finally made my debut on the Vital Chelsea site, a part of the Vital Football Network. :)
For the uninitiated, the Vital Football Network is one of the most respected football fan-sites on the Internet, which is managed by the fans themselves. It provides a platform for football fans all over the world to share their thoughts, discuss ideas and make their voices heard. I’ve been a member of this site for a long time and there were occasions when I had the urge to contribute something, but nothing materialized. In the wake of the painful defeat on Sunday, I finally made up my mind, wrote a piece and promptly dispatched it to the site editor. Over there, my moniker is ‘blueklaw’ and you can read the article here.

I must admit, the feeling of seeing my work published was amazing!

Yay!! :D

Writer’s Block Strikes Again!

Bang Head WallYou can’t see it coming. It just hits you when you least expect it to. It dominates everything that your mind comes up with, promptly labeling each idea as junk. It brings sleepless nights where you keep thinking of something to write about. But nothing ever seems to meet the seemingly high standards you’ve set for yourself.

Yes, it’s that niggling little thing that has cost many writers their sanity and a fistful of hair. The dreaded beast known as ‘Writer’s Block’.

As if me being a lazy sloth wasn’t enough, this annoying little thing keeps popping up every now and then, resulting in the awfully small number of posts I have on this blog. Since the past few days, I’ve had a few ideas, but none of them seemed to be up to scratch. So I finally decided that coming up with a post that seems to be totally absurd, useless and a waste of server space and bandwidth, is the way to overcome this situation.

Yes, it is a wacky idea and makes me look like a complete crackpot (the blog’s name is a dead giveaway). But heck, if it works I’ll be back in business in no time!

Whoa! I’m feeling better already! Now where’s that pencil? :P

Spam Magnets

The amount of spam being generated all over the world shows no sign of going down. If I had access to the stats, I’d be able to tell you that [a very large number under 100] % of all mail is spam. Okay, so I do have access to the bloody stats but I’m too lazy. Now moving on, in times like these you’d think that one must follow some basic rules of the Internet. No, I’m not talking about clearing your browsing history after each session. The rule I’m talking about is - ‘You should not give out your e-mail address on public bulletin-boards, forums etc’. But do people listen? NO.

These days I’ve been wasting entirely too much time on Orkut and I must admit, if I were a spammer I’d be laughing all the way to the bank right now. On Orkut, there are babe-magnets (everyone likes to think he is one) and there are spam-magnets. Specimens of the latter can be found hiding in all sorts of places here. All you need is bait to make them come out and walk right into your trap.

The people on this particular social-networking site are not exactly the brightest bulbs on a Christmas tree. But how stupid can you get? I came across a thread in a community, saying -

‘Hey guys instead of wasting time using net why not we start earning for free using iinternet, if u are interested then scrap ur email ids i will send u the info which is needed’.

That’s the exact unedited text. And you think people will fall for that? Of course they will, silly. At the time of writing, this thread has already received 85+ replies. I’m no one to question the integrity of a person, and maybe there really is some money to be earned through this. But posting e-mail addresses in public is surely one of the dumbest things you can do on the Internet. And this is not an isolated case. There have been more. Another one was something like this -

I have yahoo password crack software. Reply your email here, i will send you’

This was also a booming success. What’s even funnier is, when someone with a sane mind tries to warn people not to reply with their e-mails, no one actually listens. After a couple of warnings, the wannabe saviour mutters a few choice expletives at the imbeciles and disappears.

So, if you’re a spammer and looking for an easy and no-risks-involved method for harvesting e-mail addresses, look no further than Orkut. Get an account, lure people with honey-coated promises of jobs, free stuff and what-not, then coax them into parting with their mail-IDs.

Easy as pie. ;)

Voices In My Head

Many of you might have experienced the phenomenon that I’m about to mention. Case in point - a song or part of a song plays continuously inside your head and you have no control over it. I’m no stranger to this and as a matter of fact, I enjoy having a mental iPod albeit without any control mechanism. Since yesterday, there’s one line from a song that is on ‘Play->Rewind->Repeat’ inside my head. And no, it has no relation to my predicament. The teasing tune  is ‘A Song For A Broken Heart’ by A Static Lullaby which goes like this:

[youtube=http://in.youtube.com/watch?v=N9gKgVvCBj4]

Take this for what it’s worth,
This song, my smile,
Now take this for what it’s worth,
This song, my smile,
Smile!

I write to you from hell my song,
Leaving my foot against the gas
And the wall that must have said your name
(I write to you from hell tonight)
Weaken me, for nothing you can say could could stop this now
Would a noose replace his lips?
(Would a noose replace?!)

Can a song replace a broken heart?
Now can a song replace a broken love?

On the beach, I remind myself
That holding hands is so powerless.
Tonight, I don’t even have the stars
To hold onto
(To Hold onto!)

Paint!
Paint this red
Paint this red
Yeah, paint this red
Paint!
I’ll paint this red
I’ll paint this red
Paint this red

Her picture will remain unbroken,
She cries tonight, I fall in love
(I fall in love)
Wipe each tear away with sand paper,
Tonight I’m not alone
And I just wanna get your f***ing voice out of my head

Fall within the break?
Won’t you fall within the break?
Won’t you fall?
Why won’t you fall?
On the break?

On the beach, I remind myself
That holding hands is so powerless
Tonight, I don’t even have the stars
To hold onto
(To hold onto)

Can a song replace broken love?
Now can a song replace broken heart?
No
No
No
No

Okay, so the lyrics don’t make too much sense. And neither do the looping lines:

On the beach, I remind myself
That holding hands is so powerless.

But still the pesky prose haunts me and if past experience is anything to go by, it will continue to do so for another couple of days. That is, if some other song doesn’t take its place by then. Damn. :(

A Rant Against Everything

The following lines are part of a full-blown rant against anything and everything. I can’t be held responsible if it hurts your sensibilities. Also, I can’t be held responsible if you waste 30 seconds of your life on this page. So here goes:

My last post was on the 18th of November. That makes it 12+16=28 days between that one and this post. A lot of water has flown under the bridge between then and now.

Most of the things that could have gone wrong, gladly obeyed Murphy’s law and did go wrong. Some things that could have stayed right, didn’t. The recession is still on, making it harder to earn a living, let alone keep the job that you already have. IT companies have hit the brakes on recruitment of freshers, so I’m still jobless with only an offer letter and a provisional degree to show for 4 years of engineering. BPOs are taking full advantage of the situation and recruiting truckloads of people. After all, even in the current climate, there’s no shortage of poor souls who need assistance in turning on that new vacuum cleaner they just purchased.

The political situation in this country shows no signs of improvement. Some people can so easily fool millions of people, all at the same time. And be revered for that. Nice. I must restrain myself from discussing this any further, as I sense a steady stream of expletives about to be unleashed. In short, I’m fed up of the political system in India. It needs a complete overhaul. But what can I do? Nothing. I should have guessed.

They say - ‘Nothing is permanent except change’. Nothing’s changed here since the past few months. It feels as if I’m running around in circles. Same old, same old. Wake up, survive, go to bed. It’s all come to a point where I seem to have lost interest in a lot of things, not the least this blog. I’ve got unfinished projects, objectives and games that are crying out for my attention. But there’s only so much you can do on your computer until you just want to turn it off. For good. The less said about television, the better.

When I began this rant of mine, my mind was overflowing with things that needed to be written but now it’s empty. Not because I’ve written them all down, but because I can’t seem to remember them now!! I think I’ve become a bit senile.

Damn.

So the rant is over, I guess. But I was wondering, how many others find themselves in the same situation? I’d love to know!

How Interesting - A New Blog Header!

Notice anything new? Of course you do, silly! The blog has got a new hat err… I mean header! I spent a while scouring the web for something that would suit the identity of this blog - nonsensical, lazy and pointless. But maybe I’m the one and only owner of such a property in BlogLand, indicated by the lack of any suitable images.

When the going gets tough, the tough get going. In my case, it was more like ‘When you can’t whack something off the web, get off your lazy arse and make it yourself’. And the result is there to behold - a 5-minute effort that would make Picasso turn in his grave.

Nice, sharp and to-the-point. ;)

Burnt by Burnley!

bridgeChelsea 1-1 Burnley

Burnley win on penalties.

Ouch! This was not in the script. Not at all. In cup competitions there are instances of David slaying Goliath every now and then, but when that Goliath happens to be Chelsea FC, the earth is bound to shake a bit more than usual.

Didier Drogba, returning from injury, gave Chelsea the lead after being set up by Lampard. Frank Lampard himself had just come on in place of Belletti, who had gone off injured. Drogba celebrated his goal by tossing wads of cash into the crowd, like a crazy millionaire. Err, actually he just picked up a coin that had been thrown onto the pitch and tossed it back to its rightful owner among the 6000 Burnley supporters. And Didier can expect a call from the FA very soon.

With 20 minutes remaining, Ade Akinyibi equalized for Burnley. Both teams finished the game with 10 men. Franco Di Santo got injured and all 3 Chelsea substitutions had already been used. Burnley’s Steven Caldwell was sent off for picking up a second yelow card. Burnley held on to force a penalty shootout after the score remained at 1-1 after 120 minutes of football.

penalties

And what is it with Chelsea and penalties? I don’t remember us having won a penalty shootout in a million years! Burnley goalkeeper Brian Jensen saved Mikel’s shot in sudden death, sparking massive celebrations among the travelling fans.

save

So Chelsea suffer their third defeat under Mr.Scolari and are out of the Carling Cup. And something tells me, I might have jinxed this game by mentioning the giant-killing acts of the past season too many times in my preview. Oh well, at least now we can concentrate on the other 3 competitions and try to finish off games before they reach penalties. ;)

Chelsea vs Burnley - A Few Pre-Match Thoughts

It’s that time of the year when teams from the lower leagues are drawn against some of the biggest clubs in Europe, fighting for pride, glory and giant-killing honours. No, it’s not Football Manager time, it’s the Carling Cup!

Carling Cup

Chelsea are up against Burnley from the second tier of English football, who will no doubt be looking to do a Barnsley. After all, the giant-killers Barnsley beat Liverpool at Anfield and Chelsea as well, to reach the semi-finals of The FA Cup last year. Maybe Barnsley had Lady Luck tied up in the luggage compartment of their team bus, but that’s no excuse for taking a lower-league opponent lightly.

I’ll expect Mr. Scolari to field a strong team, with a mix of youth and experience. Drogba is likely to start after bidding farewell to the medical staff, who must be having their hands full these days. I hope Ivanovic starts as well; the poor lad hasn’t put a foot wrong and still can’t get a game! And please, oh please, give Di Santo some time on the pitch. Apart from these, I don’t expect wholesale changes to the Chelsea lineup.

As for the result, barring a calamity of gigantic proportions (a fancy phrase for complacency), we should win this one comfortably.

P.S. - Those who can’t watch the game on TV, tune into a stream of your choice from here.

They say that the customer is king, but hardly do we see him being treated as one. Usually the smiles on the faces of dealers and salespersons are programmed to disappear as soon as you purchase a product from them. God help you if that product decides to act up one day.

However, not all consumers take it lying down. Check out this link for Koshy John’s woeful experience with the Hewlett Packard (India) customer care. Also, don’t forget to visit the forum where it all began.

Roma vs Chelsea - A Few Rants And The View From The Couch

UEFA Champions League

Anger is not an emotion I normally associate with a Chelsea defeat. Usually it’s bitter disappointment coupled with an unwavering optimism that we’ll bounce back stronger. However, the events that occured on matchday 4 of the UEFA Champions League left me fuming. And it was not just because of the defeat or even the match entirely. Allow me to explain.

In India, the rights for Champions League matches are allotted to Ten Sports and Zee Sports. Now these two channels are like the poor cousins of ESPN-Star Sports, and have to survive on whatever little coverage of European football they are allowed to broadcast in the Indian subcontinent. And how grateful I am, that it’s only a ‘little’. The reasons for this are plenty - poor presentation, lousy commentators (barring a few times when Andy Gray & Martin Tyler commentate), ignorant TV pundits. The list goes on. But the biggest gripe is their shameful bias towards Liverpool and Manchester United. On matchdays, 90% of the time they’ll be showing live mgames of these two teams, while other matches are either delayed or shown Live on Zee Sports. Zee Sports being the poorer of the poor cousins, is not available on my Tata Sky DTH service and hardly any cable operator carries this channel.

So here I was, my DTH box connected to the PC, tuned in to Ten Sports, watching the pre-match scenes at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome. They had earlier told us that Liverpool vs Atletico is on Zee Sports, so it was only logical to conclude that Ten Sports will be showing Roma vs Chelsea. You can imagine my surprise when the host informed the viewers, with a sheepish grin I may add, that there’s been a mistake and Roma vs Chelsea is on Zee Sports.

That wasn’t in the script!

Thankfully, I’d noticed a few days ago while channel-surfing, that my cable operator was carrying Zee Sports. I swiftly unplugged the DTH box from my PC and attached the cable wire in its place. A few minutes and adjustments later, I was all set for the match.

However, it just wasn’t going to be my day. At half-time, I left my chair to get myself some refreshments, hoping we’d be able to overturn the 1-0 deficit in the second half. When I returned, i was greeted by a black screen.

What the hell happened?? Arrrghhh!!!

As I switched to another channel, I feared the worst and thought that there must have been a power failure at the operator’s premises. That wasn’t the case. Other channels were there, only Zee Sports had gone missing!! Another channel scan yielded the same result. I’d been left stranded with a stupid cable connection that was of no use to me now.

As a last resort, I fired up my browser and went straight to Justin.tv, hoping they’d have a decent stream for the game. Guess what? They did. And what a stream it was. On my 256kbps connection, it was butter-smooth and re-buffered only 7-8 times during 45 minutes. If only the match had ended in our favour as well.

Dejection

So what are my views about the match?

  • First, we need a proper striker who won’t go missing in crucial matches. Anelka was nothing if not anonymous during the game.
  • A genuine pacy winger is a must-buy in January. Letting Robinho slip from under our noses feels worse with each bad result.
  • Mikel, who has been a revelation this season, had a poor game. First he sold Deco short with a pass, causing the Portuguese to foul Totti. The freekick led to the opening goal for Roma. Then, he lost the ball which led to another goal.

deco

  • Carvalho’s absence in the defence is telling. Alex does not offer the same pace and mobility as Carvalho does.
  • We lack a Plan-B. Sometimes we are too predictable - full-backs will go forward, swing in crosses into the box. Lather, rinse, repeat.
  • The referee had a bad game. Deco’s second yellow was pretty harsh. The ref also missed a couple of dives from the Italian team.

This 3-1 loss is the worst defeat Chelsea have suffered under Scolari so far. That said, I still think we’ll top the group and make it comfortably into the last-16 of the Champions League. I just hope the next time it’s a European night, I don’t have to go through this kind of ordeal again. :P

A New Direction

I’ve been on a holiday. Not the one involving the sun, sand and sardines but a holiday of a different kind. And during this time, the blog has been neglected… again.

You see, I’m not a born writer nor do I have a penchant for churning out paragraphs after paragraphs. The blog, as it stands, is as good as dead. Content is the key to online publishing and that is exactly what I can’t seem to come up with these days. Ideas that pop up in my mind are shelved for one reason or another. Some ideas are considered to be not good enough, some seem to be out-dated and some are plain daft.

Maybe I need to steer my mind into a completely different direction, change the entire structure of thinking, add new categories to write on. Let’s see what I can come up with. :P

FIFA 09 - Quick & Dirty Review

FIFA 09 for the PC

FIFA 09 for the PC

The next instalment of EA’s football game is here. Where you ask? Apparently the game has released in Europe and has rapidly spread all over the bit-torrent network. Some may have pre-ordered their copies while some might be waiting for it to hit the store shelves in their town. However, the ones who couldn’t wait for the game to release and were not afraid to get their hands dirty, got their hands on it through the generous torrent community. So what we have here is a scenario where people were playing the game one day before its scheduled release. Nice.

Anyways, let’s get down to the interesting part, the things most of you would like answers to. Is FIFA 09 really next-gen, as promised? Does it deliver oh-so-realistic visuals? Have the quirks and bugs in previous versions been ironed out? How does it compare to its arch nemesis - Pro Evolution Soccer? All these and more will be answered!

First Impressions

Okay, I’ll skip the installation part as most of you are aware of it. Started the game, and the first screen asks me to select a language. Did that, and the mandatory declarations about the leagues and the copyrights came up.

I waited with bated breath as the opening cinematic began. Looks like EA have stopped making interesting opening videos since FIFA 2004. Even the video quality was not all that impressive. Not at all enticing. Selected my beloved Chelsea as the favourite team and I was all set.

The Interface

The interface is carried over from FIFA 08, with Adidas Live Season being a new addition. It basically allows you to select a league, for which you’ll get periodic updates from EA. For example, if a certain player is performing well in real life, his stats will be affected in the game as well. And if a player has a dip in form, his game stats will be reduced. Cool, innit?

The much-acclaimed Be-A-Pro mode is also there, with a new camera angle that looks better than the one in FIFA 08. This time around, you can opt to play a single Be-A-Pro game rather than a whole season. The other game modes are the same as in previous releases. Enough small-talk, now let’s get down to business.

Gameplay & Visuals

Sadly despite all the hype surrounding the so-called next-gen features incorporated in FIFA 09, the game did not live up to my expectations. What I expected was pretty clear - smooth, stunning visual quality, fluid player movement, ‘intelligent’ AI, engrossing gameplay. In short, I was looking for something which would make me go “Wow!” and make me want to play the game again and again.

But this was not to be. Now please note, I’m expressing my own opinions here, which may or may not correspond to your views. The first time I fired up the game, I set all details to high including 3-D Grass, Depth of Field and Shader Quality. Then I proceeded to set up my cheap PS-2 controller lookalike. But what’s this? Some buttons just would not get mapped and remained ‘EMPTY’! After a little searching on the Internet, I was able to find a solution for this.

Strike One.

Then I started a quick match and waited in anticipation at the loading screen. Ahh!! Looking good! The match began and being the seasoned footballer that I am, I could’t wait to… what the hell??

Why is the game stuttering??? Is something wrong with my setup? Is my 8600GT graphics card unable to handle the next-gen visuals?

Quit the game, reduced the detail level to minimum and started a new match, hoping for better results. Damn. Not again.

After much research on the Internet, I found many unfortunate souls plagued with the same problem. A solution was found, but the game was still not smooth enough, though playable.

Strike Two.

Okay, so I can manage with a handicapped controller and laggy visuals, but glitches in gameplay? Not at all tolerable. The first glitch is, that after managing to get my controller working, whenever I pass the ball to a teammate, the ball bounces off him, as if the right-analog stick is pressed in some direction. Secondly, goalscoring is insanely easy! It’s as if the keepers have been picked up from a pub team!! Then, in a bid to improve the player physics, they’ve made it such that in a crowd of players, the ball just keeps bouncing off players until someone manages to get control of it. Imagine that while trying to clear the ball in front of your own box surrounded by opposition attackers.

Strike Three. You’re OUT.

My Verdict

Let’s start with the good. The players look absolutely breathtaking, much more realistic than ever. The crowds have been considerably improved. Overall visual quality is pretty nice, with some subtle touches such as sweat on the foreheads of players. The ambiance is well-maintained by the chanting of fans and the crowd noises. There are loads of licensed leagues, teams and players to chose from. The Adidas Live Season is a good concept. The ability to use the mouse to play the game is quite innovative.

Now for the not-so-good. The gameplay is definitely not next-gen. Players can still move only in 8 directions and the fluidity in movement is almost absent. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is not so intelligent. Apart from the visual elements, the game is not a big leap from its predecessor. Rather, it seems like 1 step forward, 2 steps backward. After all, it’s not just tricks & flicks that make up a football game. The core element, that is the gameplay, the feeling of actually being in the game, is lacking.

FIFA 09 is a good game, but after so much hype, I was expecting more than just a visual upgrade. There are several bugs that need to be ironed out and more than once, you’ll get the feeling that EA has short-changed PC gamers.

If I had to rate it, I’d give it 7 out of 10.

Issues, Issues!

  1. Where is Andrei Arshavin? One of the best performers of Euro 2008 can’t make it into this game.
  2. Where are the UEFA Cup holders Zenit St. Petersburg? Actually, where is the Russian League?
  3. Klaas Jan Huntelaar, one of the best strikers in Europe, coveted by some of the biggest clubs, does not have a face in this game. But he’s not alone, there are many more like him.
  4. Many gamepads don’t work out-of-the-box with this game.
  5. Graphics on high-end systems are poor, but surprisingly good on mid to low range machines.
  6. Why can’t we assign custom offensive and defensive runs to players?
  7. Where is Mineiro, who has now signed for Chelsea?
  8. When a player is substituted, I couldn’t find out the substitution if no cinematic was played. There could have been at least a simple popup.
  9. The cinematics are all from previous editions of the game.

Okay, so that’s enough FIFA-bashing for now. In short, it’s not a bad game at all, but it’s not great either. So if you love the FIFA series and don’t care too much about gameplay or simply want to soak in all the visual goodness, you can very well go and get this game. Otherwise, in my opinion it would be wise to wait until Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 releases, and compare both games to pick out the one that suits your taste.

So, where were we?

It’s been a while. The blog stares at me with a disillusioned look in its eyes.

“You said you’re serious this time. You said you’d take good care of me. What happened to your promises?”

Without saying a word, I click on the ‘New Post’ button, as if overcome by a deep sense of guilt. Words usually don’t come easily, but this time it’s different…

A lot has happened since I last sat down to utter my frivolous thoughts on these pages. So what better way to reignite the flame, than by updating what’s happened in the past few weeks? Here we go, then:

  • In the world of football, or more accurately the Barclays Premier League, Chelsea sit pretty at the top with Liverpool hanging onto their blue coat-tails, separated only by goal-difference. At third are Arsenal Manchester United Manchester City…. Hull City!! No, that is NOT a typo.
  • The PC game FIFA 09 released in Europe with great fanfare, but was leaked onto the bit-torrent network at least 1 day before its official launch.
  • My days as a bored, employed but not yet called up graduate should be coming to an end soon. Yes!!
  • Speaking of bored, I learnt that the Internet is a great way to spend your time. Or rather, waste it.
  • The international break is quite a pain in the neck. No football on the telly.
  • My room has undergone a mini renovation of sorts.
  • My computer still loves me and refuses to let me stay away from it for more than an hour.

And all is well with the world! :)

Confession Time

Alright now, I’ve got a few confessions to make:

  • I seem to have completely lost the plot regarding this blog.
  • This blog was not meant to be just about football.
  • Compiling results from all matches played each week, week after week, is a pretty tedious job. Anyone who says otherwise is either lying or gets paid for doing it.
  • I don’t want this blog to just fade away and die.
  • I’ve been thinking about writing something for the past few days, but actually got around to writing it today.
  • The colour scheme that I’ve chosen resembles Deviant Art, but it makes me feel sleepy nowadays.
  • I’ve got hardly any regular readers (if any).
  • I’ll honestly try and improve the quality of this blog.

Phew… That’s a load off my back! :)

Barclays Premier League Update - Week 4

Lampard scores to make it 2-1 to Chelsea.

My apologies for being horribly late. Now that you’ve forgiven me, let’s get on with it already:

● Liverpool beat an average-looking Manchester United 2-1.

● Arsenal hammered Blackburn Rovers by 4 goals to nil.

● Fulham edged Bolton Wanderers 2-1 in a relegation six-pointer.

● The madhouse that is Newcastle United crashed to a 1-2 home defeat at the hands of Hull City.

● Portsmouth defeated Middlesbrough by 2 goals to 1.

● West Bromwich Albion narrowly beat West Ham United by a scoreline of 3-2.

● Wigan Athletic drew 1-1 with Sunderland. Titus Bramble on the scoresheet… for Sunderland. Yup, own goal.

● Everton beat Stoke City 3-2.

● Tottenham Hotspur remain rooted to the foot of the table with a 1-2 home loss against Aston Villa.

● Manchester City were brought back to earth with a 1-3 humbling by Chelsea.

A quick look at the table:

So, Chelsea reminded the noveau-rich Manchester City that ‘one swallow does not a summer make’ and that it takes a ‘team’ to actually do the business on the pitch. The win was however marred by a stupid red card to John Terry, which has now been rescinded.

That’s it, then. Champions League updates shall follow after all groups have completed their first round of matches.

Well, well, well! What a day it’s been. Not only did I post some of my old creations here, I also started and completed another wallpaper! Normally I take a long time to come up with an idea, and even longer to actually start working on it. But today everything fell into its place effortlessly and the result is here for all to see.

The photograph shows Frank Lampard celebrating his goal in the UEFA Champions League final in May 2008. Initially I had planned to write ‘Frank Lampard’ in the image, but forgot all about it during the actual Photoshopping.

So, what do you think? Not bad for a lazy sloth, eh? ;)

An old concept art

I’ve been an automobile afficionado since birth. All forms of 2-wheelers, 4-wheelers and more-wheelers fascinate me. I also used do a bit of sketching and mostly the things I drew were on hot wheels rather than high heels. Sadly, I haven’t bothered to wake up my artistic side in ages. Here’s a little blast from the past, something I made a long time ago. It’s been scanned and resized because the full-size image is just too heavy. Click the thumbnail below to see it in full.

Okay, now I can’t think of anything else to say about this. Just take a look, admire it or scoff at it. Either way, if you’re reading this, do spend a few seconds to comment on how good/bad you think it is.

Barclays Premier League Update - Week 3

Juliano Belletti celebrates his goal against Tottenham

Juliano Belletti celebrates his goal against Tottenham

Okay, so I haven’t been able to post anything in midweek, not even about Paul Scholes’ shocking but utterly hilarious handball incident in the UEFA Super Cup. Call it my lack of interest or my laziness, but I just coud not get myself to post anything meaningful here. All that is about to change though, because the 3rd week of the Barclays Premier League has just ended. This weekend, 18 teams were in action while Manchester United were busy embarassing themselves in Monaco and hence their fixture has been moved to a later date.

A short and sweet wrap-up is right here:

● A stylish Arsenal team swept aside Newcastle United 3-0. Robin Van Persie scored 2 goals before he hobbled off, injured again.

● West Ham United thumped Blackburn Rovers 4-1.

● Yet another own-goal scored by a Middlesbrough player almost cost them two points, but Tuncay Sanli saved their skins with a late goal, as Boro beat Stoke City 2-1.

● Hull City were hammered 0-5 by… Wigan Athletic!!! Wigan’s new Egyptian recruit Zaki scored a brace in that one.

● Everton crashed to a 0-3 defeat at the hands of Portsmouth.

● Bolton Wanderers and West Bromwich Albion played out a drab 0-0 draw.

● Aston Villa and Liverpool were also involved in a 0-0 borefest.

● The prodigal son returns… That’s what they’ll be thinking at Manchester City, as Shaun Wright-Philips returned from his misery at Chelsea and scored 2 goals to inflict a 3-0 defeat on Sunderland.

● Finally, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur drew 1-1, with both goals coming from defensive errors and mistakes.

A look at the table then:

Team standings after Week 3 of the Barclays Premier League 2008-09

Team standings after Week 3 of the Barclays Premier League 2008-09

So that’s about it, then. No change at the top, with Chelsea leading Liverpool on goal difference. Spurs get their first point of the season, so do West Brom. There’s an international break coming up for the World Cup qualifiers, so there’ll be some time before the next update.

Till then, I’ll be hoping to post something useful over here!

Barclays Premier League Update - Week 2

2 games, 2 goals!

2 games, 2 goals!

So another week, another round of matches done and dusted. Rome wasn’t built in a day and neither will the title be decided after 2 rounds, but early form suggests that Liverpool’s luck might just be an added advantage to them. Despite being second-best for most of the game and going down by a goal, the Reds somehow managed to nick all 3 points in the end. The big four except Arsenal, all won their fixtures this week. Here’s how it all went:

• Fulham shocked Arsenal with a 1-0 victory over the Gunners. Arsenal look very lightweight in midfield and their defense isn’t in great shape either. Arsene knows?

• Everton beat West Bromwich Albion by 2 goals to 1. Despite being very, very good in the Championship and being tipped as the most likely candidates to survive in the Premiership, the first two weeks of the season haven’t exactly given a reassurance to WBA.

• Same old, same old. New faces, same disjointed performance. Tottenham Hotspur lost again. This time going down 1-2 to Sunderland. French stiker Djibril Cisse scored on his debut for Roy Keane’s men.

• Stoke City turned the tables on Aston Villa by beating them 3-2. Villa were coming on the back of a good win against Manchester City, but the newcomers swiftly brought them back to earth.

• Newcastle United beat Bolton 1-0. Michael Owen scored, so apparently he is not injured. Yet.

• As mentioned earlier in this post, Liverpool rode their luck to win 2-1 against a spirited Middlesbrough side that went ahead thanks to the new leaner, meaner Mido. An incredibly lucky deflection brought Liverpool level and Steven Gerrard scored in the dying seconds with a good half-volley to win it.

• Blackburn and Hull City drew 1-1.

• Manchester City bounced back from their on-field and off-the-field problems to hand out a 3-0 thrashing to West Ham United.

• Manchester United beat Portsmouth 1-0. Darren Fletcher on the scoresheet. That tells you a lot, doesn’t it?

• Finally, Chelsea beat a plucky Wigan side 1-0 thanks to a sublime freekick from Deco.

Here’s how things stand at the moment:

Andriy Shevchenko has left the building

Andriy Shevchenko.

AC Milan legend.

British record transfer.

Chelsea flop.

Now back to AC Milan for one last hurrah.

These lines efectively sum up Shevchenko’s career during the past few years. He arrived at Chelsea from AC Milan for a hefty amount and a massive reputation as Europe’s finest striker. He left yesterday with his reputation diminished and his confidence shattered. Not to mention being branded the Premier League’s most expensive flop ever.

The good old times...

The terms of the deal have not been disclosed, but it appears to be a regular sale rather than a loan move. Whatever it is, it’s definitely something which will benefit both parties. Chelsea seem to have offloaded one of the highest earners at the club, thus significantly lowering the wage bill, Shevchenko on the other hand, will be hoping to rediscover his old form on the familiar hunting grounds of Italy.

Like most others, I had pretty high hopes from Shevchenko when he arrived at Stamford Bridge. But he failed to live up to the expectations. Injuries and the team’s unfavourable playing style hindered his game. But no one can point a finger at him for not trying. The man gave his all when playing in a Blue shirt. It wasn’t lack of effort by any means. His first season in English football didn’t go too well, and injuries took their toll on his second. I waited 2 years for him to finally come good and silence his critics, but guess it just wasn’t meant to be. Although he scored some cracking goals, most notably the one against Sp*rs, he just could not justify his price-tag and age was also catching up with him.

Did ya see that? Did ya? Did ya?

Did ya see that? Did ya? Did ya?

Anyways, he was one of my favourite players at the club. Never whined, nor complained about how he was treated at Chelsea. And if there’s one thing that’s missing in today’s footballers, it’s dignity. Sheva may not have shown his true ability, but he carried himself with dignity, unlike a few others at the club (Drogba, I’m looking at you). And now he has left in a dignified manner, without uttering anything against Chelsea, instead just expressing his delight (or was it relief?) on his return to Milan.

Here’s wishing him all the very best for his future and hoping that he’ll be remembered as an AC Milan legend, rather than a Chelsea flop.

August 18, 2008

Four-Nil, we played like Brazil!

So the first round of the Barclays Premier League is over and most of the results were quite predictable. Here’s a roundup of this weekend’s action:

  • Fulham suffered a 1-2 defeat at the hands of newcomers Hull City. Geovanni scored a corker.
  • Arsenal just edged it 1-0 against another promoted side, West Bromwich Albion, with Samir Nasri marking his BPL debut with a goal.
  • Middlesbrough beat Tottenham(or as some like to say, TopFour-enham) by a score of 2-1.
  • Paul Ince’s Blackburn Rovers got off to a perfect start by beating Everton 3-2. Some very late drama there.
  • Bolton Wanderers reminded Stoke City about the hardships of life in the top flight with a 3-1 win. Great (but a fluke) goal by Steinsson in this one.
  • West Ham United beat Wigan Athletic by 2 goals to 1, thanks to a brace from Dean Ashton, who then got himself injured. Predictably.
  • A lacklustre Liverpool scraped through against Sunderland by 1 goal to nil. Torres to the rescue!
  • Agbonlahor scored a hat-trick as Aston Villa trounced Manchester City. 4-2 the score in that one.
  • The two Uniteds - Manchester United and Newcastle United - played out a 1-1 draw.
  • Ahh, and finally to the best result of the lot. Chelsea thumped Portsmouth 4-0.

And this is how the table looks like after the 1st round of matches:

Team standings after Week 1 of the Barclays Premier League 2008-09

Team standings after Week 1 of the Barclays Premier League 2008-09

As I already mentioned, I’ll be concentrating more on Chelsea and their results. Being a Blues fan, I must say I’m absolutely delighted with the result, but more so because of the way we played. It was total domination. The passing was slick, fluid and the movement was fantastic. 2 players made their competitive debuts for us, namely Jose Bosingwa and Deco.
As Andy Gray would say, "Take a bow, son. Take a bow."

Take a bow, son. Take a bow.

Bosingwa looks like the real deal and could be the solution to the right-back problems that have plagued us for so long. As for Deco, the man has got a point to prove to his former club Barcelona and boy, is he on the right track! A man-of-the-match performance in midfield topped off with a debut goal. What more could you ask for?

Overall, Chelsea were a delight to watch, probably the best performance I’ve seen from them in a long time. Felipao seems to have removed the shackles from the players and given them a lot more freedom to express themselves. And the outcome was there to be seen. As they say, ‘It’s just like watching Brazil!’.

Hopefully there’s a lot more to come from this team over the course of the season and we’ll be at the top again, come May. CAREFREE!!

Independence Day!

Today India celebrates its 61st Independence Day. Out of these 61 years, I’ve witnessed 21 years with my own eyes and I’ve seen how the face of this nation has changed. It continues to evolve, even as I write this.

During this time, I may not have given anything to the nation in return for everything that I got. But still, I hope, just like most of us, that someday I’ll be able to play a small but significant contribution to India’s progress. That is all.

Happy Independence Day.

Jai Hind!

To be ‘Frank’, I’m glad it’s finally over

Chelsea have put an end to the uncertainty surrounding Frank Lampard’s future by officially announcing that the England international has put pen to paper on a mammoth 5 year contract. So now all the speculation linking him with a move to Italy and joining up with former manager Jose Mourinho at Inter has been put to rest. Good news for almost all Chelsea fans, I reckon

5 more years!

5 more years!

I won’t get into the entire story of contract talks stalling, Inter’s advances, Lampard’s demands from the club or even Frank’s deafening silence on the whole subject. You’ll find loads of news stories on these all over the web. But what has embarassed me most is the way in which the club has announced this today.

There was an announcement on the club’s official site today that a ‘World Exclusive’ news was to be announced at 5 PM GMT. That probably got lots of people wondering whether we’ve secretly signed up someone like Kaka or Robinho? Or are we moving to a new stadium? Several questions arose, some of which were straight out of a football fanatic’s fantasies! The club had successfully managed to create all sorts of hype and hoopla while raising expectations to an unreasonable and an unrealistic level, I’m afraid.

And when the clock struck 5 (or 10:30 PM IST), the ‘big’ news was made public.

“Frank Lampard has signed a new 5 year contract with Chelsea.”

Err.. What? Excuse me? Is that all? Is this what all the hype was about? Okay, so he’s finally signed a new deal. After holding the club to ransom over his demands. After a brief flirtation with Inter. After staying silent for so long that supporters started doubting whether all that badge-kissing was just out of habit rather than his love for the club. Well anyway, it’s a good thing for Chelsea and even better for Frank Lampard. After all, who in the world would offer a 5 year contract worth a rumoured 150,000 pounds a week to a 30 year old? Maybe that’s why they called it a ‘World Exclusive’.

The '30 years or older' club

The 30+ club

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not suggesting that he should have left, but I feel Chelsea FC have embarassed themselves over this saga. After refusing to budge from their earlier stance of awarding only 2 years contracts to players over the age of 30, they’ve now left themselves open to demands from other players who fall in the same age bracket. Take Michael Ballack for example, who now has 1 year left on his contract. Would he not be within his rights to demand a contract of a similar length, if not a similar payscale? Ballack is a great player, but he’s not Frank Lampard so he’ll probably be given short shrift. Doesn’t bode well for dressing room harmony, does it?

Agreed, Lampard has been here for 7 years and has been a brilliant asset, but all this haggling over a new deal has left a bitter taste in my mouth at least. Well let’s just hope that we don’t have to witness any more such tedious dramas which ultimately lead to the club bowing down to a player’s demands and making a ridiculous spectacle of it all. Here’s wishing Frank Lampard all the very best and hoping that he continues to score 20 odd goals every season for the rest of his career at Chelsea. CAREFREE!!!

AirTel ‘Hello Tunes’ fiasco

My mobile operator (AirTel) has given me quite a few reasons to frown during the time I’ve been using their services. I’ve grown accustomed to their promotional messages, fluctuating call charges and poor signal reception in my locality. I don’t find it irritating any more to receive their pre-recorded advertisements masquerading as calls. I’ve learnt from experience. I’ve adapted.

FAIL

FAIL

In fact, now I have 3 contacts named AirTel 1, 2 & 3, each having 5 of their phone numbers so that the next time they call me, I’ll know better than to pick up the phone. I’ve even assigned the AirTel ad music (the one featuring A.R. Rehman) as their ringtone. With such detailed preparations, you’d think I’m well-equipped to handle anything that AirTel throws at me. After all, what more can they possibly do?

I found the answer to my question a couple of days ago.

The day began like any other, I’d just returned from my morning classes and was planning what to do next, when my cellphone rang. I’d got a message. It read along the lines of,

‘You have been subscribed to Hello Tunes… yada-yada-yada’.

It was from 543211, the AirTel Hello Tunes service. Must be some mistake, I thought. I didn’t subscribe to any such thing! Quickly checked my balance which was a princely sum of Rs. 5.41, just in case.

No damage done… yet.

Hello?

Hello?

After about 15 minutes, I got another message, this time from a 4-digit number saying,

‘Thank you for subscribing to the Hello Tunes service. Your monthly charge of Rs.30 has been deducted from your account balance…….’.

What the….???? A quick reality-check confirmed my fears. My balance stood at Rs.-24.59.

Collateral damage.

Now here I was, my balance in the red, cellphone rendered useless and my fist trembling with anger. I called up their customer care number from my AirTel landline (yes, I know) and after navigating through their maze of menus, finally reached a customer service representative. I somehow controlled my language and my voice as I explained my problem to her. The lady checked up the records but my balance had not been updated there yet. Great. She told me to call up after 20 minutes while the records get sorted out. Gee, thanks.

Patience is not a virtue that I possess, so I called up again after just 10 minutes. This time some bloke was on the other end and I had to do the explaining all over again. Thankfully, their records had been updated so it was plain obvious what i was complaining about. After a few checks, he redirected me to a higher authority where I had to rewind & play once more. I was put on hold for 4-5 minutes and finally assured that my caller tune would be deactivated and my balance would be returned!!

Victory!!!

5 minutes later, I got the confirmation -

‘You have been unsubscribed from the Hello Tunes service…..’.

A few more minutes and my balance was back as well! Muahahahaha!!! Take that, you capitalist leech!

So in a nutshell, I got subscribed to a service that I didn’t even request for, they took away me money and left me in the lurch! And the fact that they didn’t put the blame on me - the customer - speaks volumes about this goof-up.

But what actually went wrong? No answers to this one.

‘Writer’s Block’ setting in already?

As you can see, I haven’t blogged in almost an eternity. Is the dreaded ‘Writer’s Block’ setting in or am I just being too lazy?

"It is the start which stops most people..."

"It is the start which stops most people..."

I’ve been mulling over 2-3 topics since the past few days but haven’t been able to put my thoughts into words, so lack of ideas isn’t the reason. Maybe the blog-mania has fizzled out. Maybe I’ve lost interest. Maybe I need more sleep. Let’s see if I can manage to post something, anything, today.

Oh, hang on, I just did!!

LIVE Internet TV: Is it any good?

It’s been close to 18 hours since that wretched penalty shootout. If you’d been paying attention like you should have been, then you’ll recall the bit about the streaming TV link I was talking about. So for all those who do remember, here’s my first-hand experience of the whole Internet TV situation.

It’s been around long enough, but I got a taste of it only a couple of days ago. Internet TV actually lets you watch television on your computer using the Internet, for free or for a small fee. In my case it was free, as in free beer. Now you’d think why would someone want to watch TV through the Internet when you can just watch it on the… err.. TV!

According to me, this kind of service is pretty nifty if you don’t get a particular channel in your country, such as in India we don’t receive Sky, Fox etc. Being a football lover, the off-season brings a lot of boredom with it. The only notable sports channels that broadcast the beautiful game in these parts are ESPN & Star Sports but even they don’t show any pre-season friendly matches. As things stood, I was getting bored to death waiting for the new season to start, until I stumbled upon  my saviour - www.justin.tv. The site is one of several Internet TV sites on the web, offering a collection of channels catering to different tastes like sports, news, technology and a lot more. Eureka!!!

It took me just a couple of minutes to find a channel that was broadcasting the match I was looking for, so that was pretty easy. But alas, in my excitement I’d all but forgotten about my pathetic excuse of a broadband connection. It offers me a blazing speed of 256 Kbps which, sadly, didn’t seem enough to sustain a constant video stream. The streaming would be interrupted after every few minutes while the data was being buffered, with a message ‘Not Broadcasting’ written across the top of the screen. Beggars can’t be choosers though, and I had to settle with whatever was on offer.

Twiddling my thumbs while the buffer refills...

But then again, in this age of HD video output, the quality of this broadcast was downright pathetic. I tried other channels to check if it was a problem with this particular channel, but there wasn’t too much of a difference. Instead, I started getting more slowdowns due to the better quality. Switched back to the old channel. To give you an example of what it was like, at times I couldn’t make out where the ball was. The players looked like sprites made up using an 8-bit palette, in full-screen mode.

Remidns me of my 8-bit gaming console of yesteryears...

Reminds me of my 8-bit gaming console of yesteryears...

Inspite of all this, it was quite fun actually. Sometimes it’s refreshing to rewind back to the days before HD, 1080p and what-not. Getting to see a channel that will probably never get aired in India, and that too for free, is quite fulfilling in itself. Overall, I got what I wanted and I was more than satisfied.

Maybe someday I’ll be streaming a live broadcast in full HD on my 100 Mbps Internet connection… I can dream, can’t I?

The ghost of Moscow comes back to haunt Chelsea…

We lost on penalties for the second time in 3 months. And in virtually identical circumstances. I hope I never have to witness another penalty shootout involving Chelsea again.

Shevchenko misses the decisive penalty

Shevchenko misses the decisive penalty

Leading by a goal to nil, we started the second half in much the same way - relentlessly attacking the opposition. But after blowing up some clear-cut goalscoring chances, the writing seemed to be on the wall. Possession & shots on goal stats were looking nice for Chelsea, but the one stat that matters the most - Goals Scored - still showed only 1. And that was to be our undoing.

Lokomotiv equalized in the 84th minute through a freekick which Cech completely misjudged. Lokomotiv 1-1 Chelsea. As the whistle blew for the end of 90 minutes, my worst fear was about to come true. There’s no extra-time in such matches, they directly go to penalties. Took a deep breath… and jumped with joy as Cech saved the first penalty!! Lampard scored for Chelsea, and soon the score looked like this:

Lokomotiv - X O O O O

Chelsea - O O O O

Time for the last penalty kick, reminding me of that heart-breaking night in Moscow on the 21st of May, 2008.

Wayne Bridge stepped up to take it. And missed. Another England defender misses the match-winning penalty for Chelsea. At this point, I’d lost all hope of a win. Sudden death beckons.

Last time it was Anelka’s penalty that was saved in ’sudden death’, this time it was Shevchenko. Game over. We’ll now play against AC Milan for the 3rd spot. Damn!!!

Post-celebration Blues!

Okay now, so after celebrating the launch of my new blog with a sumptuous meal of pav-bhaji, I was beginning to think that I’m coming back to my senses again. Wondering what to do next, I realized - “OMG!! It’s Chelsea vs Lokomotiv Moscow tonight!!! I gotta see it!!”. Thus began my search for a live stream of the match on the Internet and thankfully, it ended pretty soon too. As I write this, the first half has ended and the second half could begin any minute now. We (Chelsea) are leading 1-0 thanks to a brilliant goal by Essien. I’m off to watch the second half, will post a review of the match & the stream when I return!

Dawn of a new era!

Ahh!! After years of dilly-dallying, making excuses to myself and being a lazy sloth, I’ve finally managed to get myself a blog! Let the party begin!

Yeah, yeah, it’s just a blog, every man and his dog has one. So what’s the big deal, you ask? Well, in the past every time I convinced myself to start blogging, I’d hit writer’s block and that was it. Bye-bye blog!! But not this time. It’s a sort of achievement for me to actually be here and write this. So if you can, please excuse my over-the-top celebrations while I enjoy the moment…
